Project aim
To ask 50% of children aged 12-16 years with a diagnosis of epilepsy- without a learning difficulty – and their parents/carers attending paediatric epilepsy review clinic before the end of April 2020, how the epilepsy service can support their wellbeing.
Tests, changes made and what was learned in the process
December 2019
Planned to start on 22/11/2019 but no suitable patients available. Planned to use first time on 25/11/2019
January 2020
To alter questions to make them easier to understand and start using improved questions in clinic from 02/12/2019
February 2020
Set up 2 boards so that 1 can stay at each hospital site.
Challenges and retesting
December 2019
- Setting up the board to allow it to be useable but easy to alter if needed
- Wording questions in a way that is easily understood by patients & parents
- How to get patients and young people to use the board separately
January 2020
- Staff remembering to take the board to and from clinic
- How to get patients and young people to use the board separately
February 2020
Waiting for a suitable patient to take part. It took 2/3 weeks for the 10th patient to attend clinic.
Results
December 2019
Two young people and 2 parents used the board in clinic on 25/11/2019. It seemed easy to use but it was noted that some of the questions required clarifying.
January 2020
The new questions are working better and starting to gather useful data.
February 2020
Didn’t set up the new board as we only needed 1 more patient to meet the criteria for the last set of questions so we are waiting until the next set of questions are done until that 2nd board goes live.
Next steps
Develop next set of questions and set up 2nd board.
Meeting with some of the team on Wednesday 19/02/2020.
